Alimony / Spousal Support
An opportunity to meet everyone’s needs.
Alimony or spousal support is a mechanism through which a spouse with greater financial resources supports a former spouse. It is also a very emotionally charged issue in divorce. Alimony can be categorized as: Temporary, bridge-the-gap, rehabilitative, durational, or permanent. The payments can be paid on a monthly basis or paid in a lump sum amount.
The length of the marriage is important for determining the type and length of alimony. A short-term marriage is defined as a marriage that ends less than 7 years. A moderate-term marriage is defined as a marriage that lasts at least 7 years but no longer than 17 years. A long-term marriage is defined as a marriage that lasts 17 or more years.
